This bakery was next door to the hotel we were staying at. Our hotel offered breakfast but didn't have pastries so I skipped and came here. I had to point to each pastry for her to give me a description. No idea what the names were until I looked at the receipt. I ended up with Maraner Nusskipferl which has a nut filling. It was too nutty for me that I only ate the dough. Also got the topfengatschen which has a sweet cream cheese filling. My favorite that I ended up getting this throughout my stay.

Josef Schrott's is the famous and traditional Bäckerei & Konditorei of west Vienna....and in specific Rudolfsheim-Funfhaus. It was founded in 1885 and now has at least 5 locations including the Mariahilferstrasse, the Schwendermarkt, and the Meislmarkt. I stopped in the branch on the outer Mariahilferstrasse recently to pick up some Golatschen and Plunder. I am happy to report that the quality of their baked goods remains high - old Josef would be proud. Now saying this, with the quality of baked goods so high all over Vienna and prices remarkably similar throughout the city, there is no compelling reason to go out of your way to go to Schrott's. There is not a unique specialty that you can find at Josef Schrott's that you can't find elsewhere. However, if you're already in the neighborhood or heading to or from the well-known pub (Mariahilferbräu) across the street, this is a very good place to savor a tasty Viennese pastry.
